Moral Responsibility
Highlighting the ethical duty of christian leaders to respond to injustice and support anti-discrimination initiatives.
What does the Bible say about injustice?
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)
How can christian leaders engage with the proposed bill?
Christian leaders can engage by voicing their opposition to the bill through public statements, organizing community discussions, and collaborating with local advocacy groups. It is essential to mobilize the faith community to take a stand against legislation that undermines social justice.
What are the potential consequences if the SB17 bill is passed?
Buyers might be denied to purchase. Current home owners might be forced to sell their home, pay high penalty fines and even subject to criminal liabilities.
How can we support anti-discrimination initiatives?
Supporting anti-discrimination initiatives involves educating ourselves and our congregations about racial issues, participating in community events, and fostering dialogues that promote understanding and healing. Together, we can create a more inclusive environment for all.
What actions can individuals take to oppose the bill?
Individuals can write letters to their representatives, participate in peaceful protests, and engage in conversations that raise awareness about the implications of the bill. Collective action is vital in demonstrating our commitment to justice and equality.
As Christians, we believe Texas’s proudest values—freedom, opportunity, and neighborly compassion—are deeply rooted in Scripture. The Bible calls us to ‘act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God’ (Micah 6:8) and to welcome the stranger (Matthew 25:35). Our state’s history was built by immigrants and pioneers who sought a better life, much like the biblical sojourners God commanded His people to protect (‘The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt.’ Leviticus
19:34). Measures in laws like SB 17 contradict these shared ideals by denying hardworking families the dignity of homeownership solely due to their nationality. Our faith calls us to stand with the marginalized and speak out against laws that foster division and fear, rather than unity and hope.
